Florida International University, Biscayne Bay Campus, ACS Student Chapter has had the opportunity to serve our community by performing hands-on activities at family science nights in various elementary schools across South Florida in partnership with the College of Arts, Science and Education Outreach Program. Our members design activities aimed at introducing young students to fundamental topics in chemistry. The activities provide children with hands on experiments that will spark their curiosity about the science behind every day phenomena such as how to identify electrolytes using common substance. This encourages them to consider how science influences the world outside their classroom, and inspires them to follow scientific methods on their own. Students can become interested in doing science on their own, and develop an aptitude for science that diverges from simply completing assignments for class. Chapter members are always focused on creating new and interesting activities that align with ACS theme of the year. We hope to bring young students closer to science and chemistry using activities that captivate their curiosity. Furthermore, our focus is to reach diverse areas in the community to expose underrepresented students to applications of chemistry at an early age.
