Molecular self-assembly of chromophores into well-ordered supramolecular aggregates alters their photophysics and provides a unique knob to control light absorption, emission, and exciton propagation. Because the optical properties of these aggregates are incredibly sensitive to the geometry of the molecular packing, efforts to engineer new chromophores for targeted applications requires a knowledge of how aggregate structure is determined by the chemical properties of the constituent monomers. However, this information has so far been inaccessible, as the extreme sensitivity of these soft two- and three-dimensional crystals to electron and X-ray beams has precluded atomic-scale structural characterization.  I will show how a combination of EM, spectroscopic modeling, NMR, and thermodynamic control has enabled us to partially elucidate the factors that contribute to the formation of 2-dimensional molecular aggregates derived from cyanine dyes. We then will demonstrate how subtle packing changes can induce significant changes in excitonic band structure and light absorption and emission.<br/>
