Photocatalysts have been demonstrated to be valuable tools to organic chemists because of their ability to perform a multitude of transformations under mild conditions. Nitrogen-containing heterocycles called carbazoles have been shown in the past to behave as strong single-electron reductants upon excitation, and could offer a metal-free and inexpensive alternative to other photocatalysts. In this work, six carbazole derivatives were synthesized. The carbazoles each contained groups that increased conjugation to allow the absorption of light at longer wavelengths and groups that enabled the tuning of redox properties. The carbazoles are now being applied towards the dehalogenation of aryl halides using an amine base as a hydrogen donor under 365 nm irradiation. Current efforts involve optimizing the reaction and investigating the stability of the carbazoles under the reaction conditions.
