Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) found in aquatic systems plays a central role in the global carbon cycle. Upon absorbing sunlight, CDOM sensitizes the formation of photoproduced reactive intermediates (PPRI), which go on to react with pollutants in the water. The molecular properties of CDOM are determined by the source material and extent of processing in the environment. The excited triplet state (3CDOM*) plays a central role in the formation of PPRI’s and can take on a range of energy values, thus affecting its reactivity. Probe molecules, such as trimethylphenol (TMP), hexadienoic acid (HDA), and furfuryl alcohol (FFA), can be used to assess these reactivity variations. TMP reacts with the oxidizing triplets, HDA with the high energy triplets, and FFA indirectly quantifies the reactivity by reacting with singlet oxygen (1O2) a product of 3CDOM* reacting with O2. The details of reactions between tryptophan and both 3CDOM* and 1O2 have been well-established, in this study, we assess the reactivity of tryptophan with UVA-irradiated CDOM solutions from natural water and stormwater-impacted samples. By also characterizing the reactivity of these samples with the suite of probe molecules, and with fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy, we are able to gain insights to the relationship between the properties of CDOM and the photochemical reactivity with tryptophan, which serves as a model compound for other common biomolecules found in aquatic systems.
