Traditionally, excited state lifetime of fluorescent emitters is independent of excitation wavelengths, according to Kasha’s rule.  However, when the fluorophores are near noble metal nanoparticles, such relationship does not necessarily hold due to the interaction between the excited state of the fluorophores and the localized surface plasmon resonance of the nanoparticles. In this work, colloidal quantum dots or fluorescent dye molecules were placed close to Au nanoparticles, and their fluorescence decay profiles were collected. We observed that when excitation wavelength was tuned from off to on plasmon resonance, the fluorescence lifetime of the quantum dots or the dye molecules became shorter. Particularly for quantum dots, such phenomenon was observed at both the ensemble and single dot level. The study showed the fluorescence lifetime of coupled plasmonic and excited states deviates from the Kasha’s rule.  <br/>
