In order to grow the Wilkes University Chem Club, we have worked on improving engagement on three levels: at the university level, within our community, and within our own chapter. In this way, we strengthen not only our club, but also the connections that we have with the communities we are a part of. In addition, last year we rallied around the theme of Green chemistry, and worked on incorporating these principles into our activities and demonstrations. At the university level and community level, we have worked to plan activities that are both fun and informative. This includes the Chem CaFe, where we help answer freshmen students last minute questions about their ACS final exam. We are consistently involved in campus wide events and STEM activity days, where our club brings fun and age appropriate chemistry demonstrations. We participate in community events that seek to bring exposure to the sciences to younger audiences, as well as under-represented populations. This year we have worked to engage the campus as a whole for National Chemistry Week by providing students with “proud chemist “ pins. By being a visible presence on campus and our surrounding city, we have built a reputation for being an active a reliable part of the campus and the wilkes-barre community as a whole. Internally, we engage our own chapter members by providing unique opportunities to Chem Club members, including chemistry related activities on campus, tours of chemistry-related museums in the area, participation in Program-in-a-Box, and being active and engaged members of the ACS national meetings. We have also begun focusing more on providing professional development opportunities to our club members, so that the club is also a valuable tool for preparing them for life after college. Finally, it is also important to us that our club members have fun outside of the chemistry aspect, so we have organized a number of social activities, both on and off campus, to keep our members both engaged and entertained. In this way, we have worked to keep our members engaged, keep our chapter involved, and made ourselves a visible and valuable part of our college and local community.
