Imidazolium salts have long been used as ionic liquids for various purposes. They can be utilized as solvents for electrical conducting purposes, as used in some battery applications, or, as in this work, as stable high temperature solvents for synthesis due to their ability to not degrade. This work specifically examines the synthesis of a class of bis-cationic imidazolium salts with alkyl linkers between two imidazole moieties. The substituents attached to the other nitrogen atoms of these imidazole rings are methyl groups. The initial synthesis provides that the counter ions for the bis-cation are bromide anions. Work has been done to replace the bromide anions with a bis-anion, pyrophosphate. Both of these systems have been investigated for their ionic liquid properties as pertaining to temperature, and they will be examined for their ability to provide as a suitable solvent for the polymerization of phosphazenes utilizing phosphonitrilic chloride trimer as the starting material. Methods of analysis will include 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and melting point/phase transition temperature analysis.
