The Western honeybee was used as a biomonitor in this research; bees encounter all realms of their environment and pick up particulates containing trace metals which can be found in the honey they produce. After collecting a variety of honey samples from around the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, the concentrations of trace metals in the honeys were quantitatively determined. The honey samples were analyzed using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES) and later confirmed with an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). The honey samples gathered from the Lehigh Valley and also commercially produced honey were analyzed for their select trace element concentrations, including Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, Ti, and Zn.
