A single enantiomer can be obtained using a chiral catalyst to transfer its chirality to a metal ligand to establish a new stereocenter in the product. N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are a key component in organocatalysis and are frequently used as ligands in metal-catalyzed reactions. In this project, an enantiopure amino alcohol with a Boc protected amino group is converted into a known sulfone. This sulfone was then opened using an amine to result in the desired product. This product is novel because of its second nitrogen on its backbone, which functions as a second binding site which brings the chirality outside of the ring with the carbene, allowing easier transfer of stereochemistry. The goal of this project is to synthesize an imidazolinium salt that will act as a catalyst to establish a new stereocenter in a metal compound by controlling its selectivity. The products were characterized through NMR spectroscopy.
