Tuning the structure/property relationship by well-defined polymers of controlled molecular weight and low dispersity is crucial for advancement of materials performance. Herein, the effect of several poly(olefins) as one-layer barriers on thin and flexible transparent PET substrate is examined towards blocking water vapor. Polymers produced by living cationic polymerization such as poly(isobutylene) (PIB) and butyl rubber, semi-crystalline polymers such as poly(ethylene) (PE), poly(propylene) (PP), and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) are examined, as well as amorphous transparent polymers such as poly(dimethysiloxane) (PDMS) and the organo- and perhydro-poly(silizanes) (e.g. Durazane). The effect of those barriers towards water vapor transmission reduction (WVTR) relative to PET itself, the importance of the coating material thickness, and parameters such as the induced substrate cracking/deformation, and the permitted from solubility deposition for each polymer will be discussed. Finally, the impact of incorporated nanomaterials (graphene, MWNTs, clay, silica-NPs, MoS2, Au- and Al-NPs) into the polymer matrix will be shown, and the water vapor barrier properties of those polymers and polymer nanocomposites will be examined relative to sputter-coated aluminized PET of the same thickness.
