The isomerization of terminal alkenes to internal alkenes is usually facile, but due to the thermodynamic preference for E-alkenes over Z and the ease of over isomerization to form higher alkenes, producing Z-2-alkenes specifically is challenging. Recent catalytic development has produced systems that can favorably form E-2-alkenes, but Z-2-alkenes have remained a target for synthesis. Our group has made significant progress in forming Z-2-alkenes with high selectivity in the last two years utilizing mild reaction conditions, low catalyst loadings, and a single acid additive. In this presentation, a variety of Mo(0) catalysts having selectivities as high as 20:1 Z:E with 80% conversion to 2-alkene are reported. A wide array of terminal alkene substrates has provided mechanistic insight into how these catalytic systems work. Based on in situ <sup>31</sup>P NMR experiments, a potential active species is proposed.
