Ferroelectric liquid crystals undergo electro-optic switching much faster than conventional liquid crystals. Such behavior has been observed in 1,2,4-oxadiazole based liquid crystals, but not in 1,3,4-oxadiazoles. We postulate that the off-axis dipole moment in the former compounds may be responsible for the difference. However, the majority of these compounds only enter the liquid crystal phase at temperatures too high for practical use. Our research seeks to understand if the incorporation of polar lateral groups into 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives can create ferroelectric properties, while simultaneously lowering the phase transition temperatures.
