To date, relatively little is known about the current spate of vaping-induced lung injuries. The common factor among the known cases is simply vaping, with most patients having reported THC use. Symptoms appear related to chemically-induced lipoid pneumonia or burns within the lung. An extensive study of vaping chemistry can afford evidence-based data towards developing harm reduction strategies and enable an objective evaluation of this complex public health challenge. A focus of this talk will thus be on the chemicals present in the aerosols of manufactred cannabis extracts, including the mechanistic pathways that occur during the vaping process leading to the formation of numerous compounds, some of which are well-known inhalation toxins that are not present in the starting formulations. The absence of results from inhalation toxicity studies on so many of the aerosol components poses a significant challenge in predicting acute and chromic potential health effects. Revealing the identity and levels of the molecules present in the aerosols can help guide toxicological investigations.
