Coordination driven self-assembly has allowed the preparation of a large number of molecular polygons (triangle, square,…) and polyhedrons (cubes, prisms,…) with remarkable properties. The corresponding host cavities offer promising opportunities for applications in molecular recognition or even in guest transport. Nevertheless, very few electro-active polygons or polyhedra have been described, and most of them are electro-deficient. In this context, we recently designed electron-rich self-assembled 2D and 3D discrete structures based on the tetrathiafulvalene unit (TTF) and derivatives, such as the 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene (DTF) and extended TTF (exTTF). A key feature of this last unit lies in the fact that its oxidation process is accompanied by a drastic change of the molecular shape. The latter evolves from a highly bent butterfly-like structure in the neutral state (exTTF) to a fully aromatic unit (exTTF<sup>2+</sup>) where two aromatic 1,3-dithiolium rings are grafted onto a planar anthracene moiety.<br/>In this presentation, we will present original self-assembled i) containers bearing electro-active exTTF side-walls, ii) DTF based tweezers, and focus on their ability to redox-control the encapsulation/release of anionic or neutral hosts.
