Polybenzoxazines, P(BA-a)s, are a new class of resins with properties that make them valuable to many industries, especially aerospace. The ring opening polymerization, (ROP), of the benzoxazine ring in the monomers of the resin produce the polybenzoxazine. The ROP is triggered by high temperatures, a cure temperature, that ranges from 160°-270°C. If P(BA-a) resins were more widespread they could replace resins that are less versatile and could be used to manufacture composites with beneficial properties. The high cure temperature for P(BA-a)-based resins is a major factor in the wide-scale deployment of this polymer into various industries. Accelerants bearing sulfonate functional groups are known to reduce the cure temperature of the many benzoxazine resins and represents an interesting class of materials to consider in formulating these resins. This presentation will focus on an investigation into the preparation of inorganic structures with such functional groups and their interaction with benzoxazine-based materials.
