Electrochromic materials have attracted interest recently as thin film materials for use in applications such as smart windows and small molecule sensors. Our project focuses on the interplay between electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of such materials. Specifically, we investigate hybrid inorganic-organic layered materials. These materials individually have intriguing electrochromic properties that interact together in interesting ways. We use silicotungstic acid (STA) as the inorganic layer. STA is a polyoxometalate with a cage-like structure that is often used as a catalyst. STA is blue in color with a high extinction coefficient when reduced. For the organic layer, we employ polyaniline (PANI). PANI is a conductive polymer used in chemiresistive sensors, especially those probing pH changes. PANI changes from clear to green to purple depending on redox state as well as changing its conductivity. These materials are combined to form thin films using layer-by-layer deposition and are held together through electrostatic interactions. We report the electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of thin films composed of layer-by-layer thin films. Specifically, we report the characterization by UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrochemical methods, including cyclic voltammetry. Deposition of layers is also assessed using visual inspection and contact angle goniometry.
