A glimpse at the current periodic table suggests this to be a solid ordering scheme containing 118 well classified entries. Yet the amount of experimental data for a given element generally becomes less and less with increasing element number. I will first summarize what we do know about the artificial elements beyond uranium. I will then describe our chemistry studies of flerovium (element 114) and use these as an example to demonstrate how such data is obtained. I will close with an outlook on the potential future of the periodic table.
