The energy density of lithium (and future sodium) batteries can surpass other battery technologies. However, there are safety issues associated with these batteries, limiting their use in high power applications because of flammable liquid electrolytes, which can lead to fire and explosion. There have been ongoing efforts to replace liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes with desired properties such as high conductivity, flexibility, good electrode contact, and low-flammability. Solid electrolytes made with ceramic/glass have high ionic conductivity (10-2 -10-3 S/cm) comparable to liquid electrolytes but they are brittle, have poor adhesion to electrodes, are difficult to process and not stable with lithium/sodium metals. The most investigated solid electrolyte made with organic/soft polymers, polyethylene oxide (PeO)/LiX suffers from low ionic conductivity because of the high affinity of lithium to the ether oxygens of PEO and because ion migration is coupled to slow back bone segmental motions of the amorphous polymer network. The most viable approach for high conductivity soft solid electrolytes is the design of low affinity channel walls for entrapped ions. The first such material we have prepared, DMF:LiCl, has the highest conductivity reported to date for a pure soft solid Li + organic electrolyte. Additionally, another non-air sensitive, high temperature range (-40 °C and 85 °C) soft solid crystal electrolyte, Adiponitrile2.LiPF6, will be presented. This material has high voltage widow of 5V, high ionic conductivity of 4x10-4 S.cm-1 at room temperature, and cells constructed thereof have good capacity of 140 mAh/g at room temperature.
