Aldaric acids have properties that could make them good choices as chelating agents in some applications. Electrochemical oxidation of sodium glucoheptonate, a widely-used sugar acid salt, offers a green approach to synthesizing the aldaric (heptaric) acid analog of glucoheptonate. Monitoring and controlling pH and temperature provides a means of minimizing unwanted side reactions during the oxidation. The synthesis of the heptaric acid analog of glucoheptonate was confirmed from the <sup>13</sup>C NMR of the aqueous reaction product.
