<i>Mycobacterium tuberculosis </i>is the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB) infections. With the emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) exhibiting resistance to rifampicin and isoniazid, traditionally the two most effective antibiotic treatments, new antibiotics are urgently needed. Recently, our lab has discovered a novel family of diphenylureas that exhibit antimicrobial activity against several bacterial strains including mycobacterium, similar to TB. Based on the previous data and results, several new nitro-substituted diphenylurea derivatives were synthesized and examined for their structure-activity relationship. With the aim of finding the structural features that contribute to the antimicrobial activity, examination of the chain length between the nitrophenyl ring and phenyl ring took place. Specifically, we extended the length of the carbon chain between the urea and phenyl ring. Further examination of the nitrodiphenylureas took place by synthesizing compounds with para and meta nitro substitutions, as well as adding different groups to the phenyl ring. It is hoped that these modifications will lead to antibiotics with increased activity towards TB.<br/>
