<br/>The local composition and structure of catalytically active sites define their activity and selectivity, as well as their stability. This talk will illustrate how a molecular perspective of active sites can be gained by combining information from experiments and theoretical analysis. Examples will include isolated metal oxide species, metal cations exchanged into zeolites, and Lewis acid-base pairs present in solid oxides used for a variety of reactions. The reactions examined will include the dehydrogenation of alkanes and alcohols and the subsequent reactions of the resulting alkenes and alkanals.<br/>
