Catalytic olefin hydroarylations access late-stage functionalization of typically inert C–H bonds. Previous work demonstrated that one-pot treatment of CoBr2 with Grignard reagents afforded highly active alkyne and olefin ortho-hydroarylation catalysts. Such systems, however, limit substrate compatibility due to an excess of nucleophilic reagent required to generate the active catalytic species in situ. Based on mechanistic studies, a single-component, low-valent Co complex was developed, which exhibited excellent activity towards alkyne and olefin hydroarylations. This catalytic species allows for an expanded substrate tolerance through the removal of incompatible reagents; this method has been applied to over 30 substrate examples with yields ranging from good to quantitative.
