The study of macromolecules is based on lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and proteins. A major and essential component of all living things is a protein. This macromolecule is formed by two processes: transcription, when DNA is copied to RNA, and translation, the development of RNA to proteins. In translation, mRNA carries transcribed genetic information needed for protein synthesis. The mRNA is decoded to construct a polypeptide using RNA nucleotides (adenine, uracil, guanine and cytosine) that are built in sets of codons. The tRNA contains a sequence of nucleotides called anticodons, which attach to the codons and transfer the information to construct the polypeptide in the ribosome. The ribosome catalyzes the chemical reaction, binding the amino acids to form the polypeptide chain and, therefore, synthesizing a protein subunit. Similar to the mRNA, the chapter officials convey the mission of the student chapter through careful decision making and keeping an open communication with all members. The mRNA’s codons represent the goals set by the chapter’s mission which include: organizing activities that influence the growth of the ACS community by inspiring a new generation of scientists, providing academic and professional events, educating about Green Chemistry and helping others through volunteer work. Serving as the anticodons are the activities arranged in order to accomplish these pillars, such as: Chem Offs, presentations of chemical experiments through school orientations, webinars, Green Chemistry Seminars, and food donations for the less fortunate. These are bound together by means of the ribosome, evident in the dedication and effort that is put forward in order to maintain an active participation from all members in our Campus. As a result, we have our amino acids that represent the characterized bond between member and chapter. Finally, we obtain a polypeptide chain that serves as the synthesized ACS-RUM Chapter, our macromolecule!
