Since their invention, not even a decade ago, disposable vaporizers have dominated the cannabis market. Unfortunately, there are serious issues associated with these devices. A lack of research into their dangers coupled with unscrupulous business practices has exposed the consumers to potentially toxic chemicals, causing health issues and deaths. In addition to disposable cartridges’ effects on consumer health, these devices have also added to the already overwhelmed waste systems. This group has developed a new system designed to absorb and hold cannabis oil in an inert pumice stone, until it is inserted into a vaporizing device, or is placed in a “dab rig”. This method eliminates all the materials that are generally used in disposable vapes including, fiberglass wicks, metal coils, and plastic housing, which are potential sources of harmful chemicals inhaled by consumers. After a stone is depleted of its oil it is thrown away and degrades to inert sand. Traditional disposable cartridges will persist in the environment for thousands of years to come. This presentation will discuss a new effective way of combating the issues and threats disposable vapes pose to both human and environmental health, and we would like the scientific community to take an interest in order to assist with harm reduction in the cannabis industry.
