The purpose of these experiments was to study the pyrolysis of 2-cyclo-penten-1-one. This was done by heating a gaseous mixture of 2-cyclo-penten-1-one and argon, in a 1:200 sample:argon ratio, to temperatures of 1000-1400 K in a pulsed hyperthermal nozzle. The products were isolated in an argon matrix and identified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was found that pyrolysis of 2-cyclo-penten-1-one produces vinylacetylene, acrolein, acetylene, ethylene, propene, carbon monoxide, and propargyl radicals. The propargyl radicals are particularly interesting because this result indicates that 2-cyclopentenone could be a precursor to soot formation in certain high-temperature environments. The vibrational spectra contain bands that are associated with additional products that indicate possible chemical structures and pyrolysis mechanisms of interest. The data collected is of importance because it reveals how the occurrence of 2-cyclopentenone may affect the environmental impact of the production and use of certain biofuels. Also, through the understanding of the thermal decomposition of this molecule, the effects that particular functional groups have on pyrolysis mechanisms can be studied.
