Increased U.S. participation in international collaborative efforts involving education, research and development (R&D) ventures could offer a variety of economic, technical, political, and institutional benefits. This presentation will focus on challenges and opportunities of international collaborations between the pharmaceutical industry and academic institutions. Undoubtedly, the pharmaceutical industry is facing enormous challenges, including fierce generic competition, decreased efficiency, and declining innovation. These factors have led to fewer new drugs reaching the market. In addition, the pharmaceutical industry has been subjected to widespread criticisms regarding the drug pricing and corporate profitability. The pharmaceutical industry has embarked on a wide range of initiatives to address these challenges. These include expanding collaborations across the globe, pursuing aggressive outsourcing strategy; increase their external sponsored research efforts, effectively addressing generic competition, and co- development/co-marketing of new drugs to decrease risk. Separately, the Bayh- Dole Act (1980) opened the door for academic institutions to pursue collaborations the pharmaceutical industry to leverage their novel research. The presentation will highlight challenges and opportunities facing international collaborations with emphasis on the Moulder Center’s capabilities and business model, which produced several successful international collaborations.<br/><br/>
