We used a simple, cost-efficient GC-MS system to separate and quantify the components of liquid mixtures. The compact GC uses an 11 m capillary column and room air as carrier gas. The MS has the flexibility to scan multiple mass ranges in one run, which is necessary to avoid the intense air peaks. After separating the components with the GC, their MS spectra can be recorded and compared with the library for identification purposes. By selecting mass peaks which are specific for each component of the mixture, the MS response can be calibrated by injecting known amounts of each chemical. The calibrations were found to be stable and repeatable over time. A very significant advantage of using MS coupling to a GC is that the components can be quantified through the MS calibration even in cases when the separation in the GC column is not complete.
