Chemistry courses have primarily been taught in traditional face-to-face style classrooms that rely on the instructor being directly in contact with the students during the lecture. However, there has been a shift to offering STEM courses in a variety of different modalities. Offering courses in different modalities provides potential benefits to a wider range of students. Introductory STEM courses serve as gateway courses into the physical sciences and therefore there is a need to make these courses more accessible to students. One issue with making this shift to online courses is being able to monitor student understanding of the content and keeping them engaged in the course. The following study compares two course modalities (face-to-face and mix-mode) for a large enrollment fundamental chemistry course at the University of Central Florida. The mix-mode lecture content was offered through online videos through the learning management system (LMS) webcourses. Lecture videos were created specifically for this study and used novel multimedia instruction to engage students. The lecture videos were design to help student build a stronger connection to the information and  help bulid a stronger foundation in chemistry. In order to gauge students’ understanding of the material, they were assessed through online quizzes before coming to class and with iClicker questions at the beginning of class. These results were then compared to students who took this course face-to-face with the same instructor. Comparison of overall grades, exam scores, and student perception of these courses were compared to better understand how students responded to the mix-mode platform.  In order to monitor the robustness of the content, the same course was taught by a different instructor at the university, data from this course was compared to the prior course data.
