Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) is a current state of the art polymer dielectric for energy storage capacitor application with a limiting operational temperature of 85 °C. But for applications like downhole oil and gas characterization, aerospace application, hybrid and electrical vehicles, polymer dielectrics with stable and high energy density at temperatures greater than 100 °C are necessary and traditional high-temperature polymers fail to fulfill this demand.<br/>To address this requirement, we have developed a norbornene based polymer system through molecular engineering with a high glass transition temperature, large bandgap, and energy density of 5.9 J/cc at 170 °C. The synthesized polymer exhibits stable dielectric constant with low dissipation loss (&lt; 0.5%) for a large frequency and temperature range of -160 °C to 160 °C. For in-depth understanding, polymers were studied in detail using electrical characterization techniques such as D-E loop, high field conduction, dielectric spectroscopy, and DC-breakdown measurements. These polymers show very low high field electrical conduction even at temperatures greater than 100 °C, resulting in high energy density at high temperatures when compared with other traditional high-temperature polymers.
