Incorporation of a pendent base into the secondary ligand coordination sphere has been shown to enhance catalytic performance in several transition-metal acceptorless dehydrogenation (ADH) catalyst systems. While typical cases incorporate a pendent amine and alcohol that plays a crucial role in the mechanism, relatively few studies have systematically explored the effect of varying the proton affinity, basicity, and placement of the pendent base on catalytic performance. Our goal is to investigate these effects on a series of Ru-based ADH catalysts containing different pendent bases. This presentation will describe our recent efforts toward the synthesis and characterization of a series of biphenyl-based bisphosphino ligands bearing pendent bases. These ligands were designed to allow for ready access to multiple base-variants through late-stage ligand modification. Preliminary results for the preparation of bifunctional transition metal complexes bearing these ligands will be included.
