Visible Light Photoredox Catalysis (VLPC) is an approach which utilizes wavelengths of light in the visible spectrum to initiate single electron transfer reactions. It provides a practical and operationally simple way to promote radical chemistry under mild conditions. In recent reports from our research group and others, it has been discovered that, when exposed to visible light, many organic dyes can act as efficient visible-light photoredox catalysts. The use of organic dyes as catalysts, as opposed to transition-metals, could benefit industrial synthesis of certain types of compounds that require strict removal of heavy metal impurities from end products before consumption. Halogenated arenes are very important end products and intermediates in the pharmaceutical industry, and thus, could benefit from new methods that employ biologically benign catalysts. Our recent progress towards isolating the chlorinated products from a reaction that employs an environmentally benign organic dye as a VLPC catalyst and the chlorinating agent N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) will be presented.
