Continuous flow technology was used to study the photoreduction of aromatic ketones and aldehydes to form 1,2-diols. The syntheses were carried out in 1:1 isopropanol/acetone with a residence time equal to ten minutes.  One residence time is equal to the amount of time it takes a molecule to travel through the flow reactor.  An inexpensive UV lamp was used to initiate the photoreduction and isopropanol was used as a H-donor in these syntheses.  Compared to reactions done in batch, an increased surface area to volume ratio in flow led to more effective irradiation and improved reaction efficiency.
