The selective and low temperature oxyfunctionalization of light alkanes via transition-metal based catalysis is a particularly challenging problem in modern day chemistry. Hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes and (alkyl)aromatics) are the main building blocks on which most of the organic chemical industry is based. The reasons for generating valuable intermediates from alkane-based feedstocks are many-fold, the main ones being price and availability. Therefore, the direct conversion of methane into value-added chemicals under mild conditions is needed. Exploring advanced C-H functionalization catalyst and reaction systems is a major key of converting methane in a direct and mild manner. Herein we report the photo-catalytic oxidation of light alkanes using a Fe3-(µ3-O)-(TFA)7(HTFA) complex in conjunction with trifluoroacetic acid (HTFA), and employ the typical catalytic processes in these reaction systems and highlight the potential heterogeneous catalysts with notable C–H activation performance.
