Compounds containing 1,1′-bis(phosphino)ferrocene ligands are used in a variety of catalytic applications. In this study we prepared the compounds [Pd(PP)MeCl] (PP = 1,1′-bis(dicylohexylphosphino)ferrocene (dcpf) and 1-diphenylphosphino-1′-ditert-butylphosphinoferrocene (dppdtbpf)). The oxidative electrochemistry of these new compounds and the previously reported [Pd(PP)MeCl] (PP = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) and 1,1′-bis(diiso-propylphosphino)ferrocene (dippf)) and [Pd(dtbpf)Me]Cl (dtbpf = 1,1′-bis(ditert-butylphosphino)ferrocene) compounds was examined. In acetonitrile, the [Pd(PP)MeCl] compounds were found to react with Na[BArF24] (BArF24 = tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate) to remove a chloride and give [Pd(PP)Me(MeCN)]. The catalytic activity of these compounds both with and without the addition of Na[BArF24] was examined in a variety of polymerization reactions. The compounds were found to be effective catalysts for the homo-polymerization of phenylacetylene, 1-hexene and 1-decene. Additional catalytic systems were examined and will be reported.
