Like many estuaries in urban areas, Long Island Sound is plagued by hypoxia.  This condition is the result of excess nutrients being introduced into the water system.  Anthropogenic nutrients (predominantly nitrogen and phosphors) from sources such as sewage treatment plants, agricultural fertilizers, and septic tanks are introduced into the water which results in excess algae growth.  When the algae sink and decompose there is an increase in the demand for oxygen putting stress on the biology. This study focused on analyzing the historical hydrographic data that has been collected by the state of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.  The data set spans over thirty years and consists of nutrients measurements as well as temperature, salinity, and oxygen.  The data shows that overall the nitrogen in the Long Island Sound is decreasing which correlates to a decrease in hypoxia in the sound. However, the data also reveals that Phosphorus has been increasing, possibly affecting the overall chemistry of Long Island Sound.<br/>
