We have been investigating the synthesis of complex monomers used to produce novel high-performance ionic polymers for membrane-based gas separations. These ionenes, polymers where charged moieties are incorporated directly on backbone rather than pendant, are inspired by leading material classes for membranes including polyimides, polyamides, polyelectrolytes, and supported liquid membranes. Through manipulation of substituent position and monomer end groups, we have expanded the opportunities for distributing and alternating functional groups with ionic content, and significantly increased the potential molecular weight of the repeat unit. We have developed synthetic methods to create these unprecedented ionic polymers by linking new monomeric units and studying the resultant material properties based upon the tailored functionality and controlled regiochemistry. The multifaceted design of these polymer repeat units allows for tuning of thermal and mechanical properties through evaluation of the contributions and behavior of each monomer segment and functional group. This work has been expanded to study the effects of adding ionic liquids or functional ionic small molecules as fillers, which induce intriguing combinations of intermolecular forces which dictate the structuring, thermophysical properties, and performance of these ionene composites. Analysis and control of these features is integral for engineering ionene materials which form robust films with high free volume, targeting application as membranes for the separation of light gases (i.e. H2, N2, O2, CH4, CO2). This presentation will focus on the design and synthesis of these customizable materials, including discussion of their distinct physical properties and optimization when applied as gas separation membranes, shape memory/self-healing materials, and fibers for additive manufacturing.
