Boron has been the subject of studies involving propellants and energetic materials. Fluorine-containing materials have been studied with boron for ignition and combustion enhancement for use in hybrid rockets. Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) has been studied for use as a composite material with metal particles. Unique boron-PTFE mixtures have been synthesized and characterized and used to develop a further understanding of the ignition and combustion processes.
