Colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles have been the focus of much research due to their uniquely tunable electronic properties and high surface areas. However, most semiconductor nanoparticles have short carrier diffusion lengths and poor charge extraction efficiencies. Traditionally, these short diffusion carrier lengths, typically around 5 ns, have been extended through the modification of core-shell architectures. Our research focuses on establishing the role of Mn2+ doping as an alternate method to prolong charge carrier lifetimes. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of both ZnSe and ZnSe Mn2+ doped nanoparticles by transmission electron microscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, absorbance spectroscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy, steady state and time resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. We have shown that the presence of the Mn2+ has increased the charge carrier lifetimes in ZnSe nanoparticles by as much as 8 orders of magnitude. This work presented will serve as a foundation for future studies addressing electron transfer to acceptor molecules and catalyst design.
