Among the CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage) technologies, CO2 mineralization converts CO2 into carbonate minerals via carbonation of Ca-rich compounds. Mg-rich materials can react with CO2 to form stable carbonates, while Mg2+ can reduce calcium carbonates growth rate and stability. In this study, the effect of Mg2+ on carbonates was investigated with various mole ratio of Mg2+/Ca2+. The mineralized carbon quantity and thermal behavior of precipitates have been evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns identified crystal phases and substitution of Mg2+ for Ca2+. TGA/DTA suggested that the dominant phase of carbon is CaCO3(s) and Mg2+ decreases thermal stability of carbonates. Refined structural parameters confirmed that Mg2+ incorporation in calcite increases distortion and reduces the structural stability. In case of high Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio, some parts of CaCO3(s) was identified as aragonite, and the amount of Mg2+ substituted in calcite lattice was 6.5%. The XRD peak broadening was interpreted using Double-Voigt approach. Microstrain of calcite was sharply increased when mole ratio of Mg2+/Ca2+ exceeds 1. In conclusion, Mg2+ ions increase internal free energy of calcite which eventually enhance the crystal solubility.
