Metal nanoparticles (NPs) supported on reducible metal oxides have shown migration of the support over the NPs upon reduction with H2 at elevated temperatures (full coverage at temperatures &gt;400 °C). This type of support migration is typically denominated as strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs). SMSIs can create new active sites with interesting catalytic properties and prevent sintering of NPs. Reports have shown that alcohols can reduce metal oxides at near-ambient temperature; therefore, we have tested the creation of SMSI in Au/TiO2 and Pd/TiO2 upon exposure to a common alcohol. Full coverage of metal NPs by a TiOx layer can be achieved upon treatment of Au/TiO2 and Pd/TiO2 in a common alcohol at temperatures below 200 °C. Evidence for SMSI in Pd/TiO2 consisted of IR spectroscopy of CO adsorption and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Evidence of SMSI in Au/TiO2 consisted of IR spectroscopy of CO adsorption, while EELS results were not conclusive due to the presence of carbon deposits (characterized via temperature-programmed desorption and Raman spectroscopy) on the surface after treatment in a common alcohol. The degree of encapsulation of the supported metal NP can be tuned by retracting the oxide overlayer through treatment in oxygen at different temperatures. Au/TiO2 is capable of oxidizing CO at ambient temperature but shows deactivation with time-on-stream; however, Au/TiO2 with partially induced SMSI was proven successful at mitigating catalyst deactivation. Kinetics of the catalytic conversion of the common alcohol, while SMSI is generated, show the impact of partial SMSI on acid-base catalysis.
