The present abstract deals with the synthetic procedure in which silver nanoparticles were produced in the reaction of Ag2O and H2 gas. Following the procedure reported by Chumanov’s group (J. Phys. Chem. B, 2004, 108, 13957-13962), 2.5g of Ag2O was added to a reaction vessel and saturated with H2 at 1.7 atm and 70 0C. Absorption spectra and absorbance at the maximum wavelength were recorded. Under the condition of no reaction mixture agitation, nanoparticles of maximum size were produced (D = 35 nm) during the first 2 hours of synthesis. When moderate agitation was applied, a continuous increase in particle size was observed; at the end of the synthesis (120 min) the average particle size was 110 nm. In this synthesis, a large excess of continuously dissolving solid Ag2O is present at the bottom of the reaction vessel. This produces a concentration gradient of Ag+ within the reaction vessel, which in turn makes quantifying the kinetics of particle growth difficult. To overcome this problem, 10 mg/L of Ag2O was dissolved; this concentration is below the solubility limit, resulting in a uniform concentration of Ag+. The observed plasmon peak remained at (400 ± 2) nm, indicating that the particles were of a consistent size. Since we worked with a finite amount of Ag2O, which was completely reduced, we were able to determine the extinction coefficient of Ag nanoparticles of 20 nm diameter (7.3 × 10-10 M cm-1). Following an induction period, a linear increase in the mass of reduced Ag was observed (1.0 mg/sec). The particle formation rate was found to be 1.7 × 1010 particles/sec. The data obtained will be used to learn more about the mechanism of particle formation; this work is in progress.
