Iron deficiency in microorganisms and plants is commonly observed in oxic systems at circumneutral pH such as marine surface waters or calcareous soils. In such systems, the low solubility and slow dissolution rates of stable iron oxides limit the bioavailability of iron. Iron reduction has long been discussed as possible mechanism for biological iron mobilization from iron oxides under iron limiting conditions. However, very fast re-oxidation of Fe(II) in oxic, pH neutral systems seemed to preclude iron acquisition strategies relying on the mobilization and transport of reduced iron to the organisms. In this context, we elucidated an iron oxide dissolution process involving electron transfer from biogenic reductants to iron oxides and subsequent catalysis of a ligand-controlled (non-reductive) dissolution mechanism. This process does not require diffusive or advective transport of Fe(II) to the organisms.<br/>In this presentation, the catalysis of ligand controlled dissolution by reductants will be discussed, including open questions regarding the dissolution mechanism. Particular attention will be given to coumarins, a particular class of plant reductants that has recently been shown to be exuded under iron limiting conditions. Coumarins are iron reductants but also possess ligating groups and therefore may autocatalytically promote iron oxide dissolution.   <br/>
