Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are highly programmable two-dimensional (2D) exciton materials that allow extremely rapid charge and energy transfer at their atomically thin and sharp interfaces. Heterostructures integrating organic molecules with TMDC layers offer new opportunities in developing solar energy functionalities that combine the best features of these two distinct classes of material. Here we examine exciton dynamics, triplet-triplet energy transfer and photon upconversion at the interface of TMDCs and singlet fission occurring organic semiconductors. Mixed singlet and triplet excitonic states exist in TMDCs due to the material’s strong spin-orbit coupling. This property permits energy transfer from the TMDC to both the singlet and triplet states of the organic materials. By varying the inorganic and organic species, electron transfer rate as a function of driving force can be determined. Three heterostructures have been created and are being studied using ultrafast microscopy and spectroscopy. The samples include tungsten diselenide with a rubrene organic layer, tungsten disulfide layered with tetracene and molybdenum disulfide with TIPS-pentacene. Both steady-state and time resolved photoluminescence measurements have been performed with a picosecond-pulsed diode laser in a confocal micro-PL set up. To better understand and image exciton dynamics, transient absorption spectroscopy and microscopy will be employed. The results of this study aim to help provide guidelines when engineering new nanostructured light harvesting devices.
