Understanding the relationship between macromolecular structure and function is a core learning outcome in nearly all biochemistry courses; however, instructors are largely limited to using 2D images in order to teach students about 3D molecules. This can limit the ability of students to grasp key visuospatial elements of 3D macromolecular structures, such as a sense of scale or the effects of conformational changes on both local and macromolecular levels. To address the current gap in instructional tools available for teaching macromolecular structure, we are currently in development of augmented reality (AR) technology to allow students and instructors to easily engage and interact with virtual 3D macromolecular structures. This technology has been implemented in a trial in order to gain initial insights in to how the technology will be used by students and how the technology might impact students’ understandings of the biochemistry content presented. In this presentation, I will discuss the preliminary analysis of students’ perceptions of the technology and the biochemistry content using a phenomenographic perspective.
