Intense efforts have been dedicated to develop effective technologies for carbon capture and sequestration, especially due to the increase of the atmospheric CO2 concentration and its implications on global climate change. In recent years, solid-supported amine adsorbents have been investigated for their CO2 adsorption performance at low temperatures. In this study, mixtures of linear poly(propylenimine) (LPPI) of various molecular weights were impregnated into silica SBA-15 supports to investigate the effect of aging (1 year) and accelerated oxidation on their CO2 adsorption performance. The measured CO2 uptake and the amine efficiencies of the aged samples were similar to those containing the fresh polymers. These data suggest that aging did not influence the ability of LPPI polymers to retain CO2 uptake under both flue gas (10% CO2) and ultradilute stream (air, 400 ppm CO2) conditions. Subjected to accelerated oxidation conditions (21% O2/He) at 110 °C for 24 h the LPPI/SBA-15 composites retained up to 95% of their CO2 adsorption capacity and amine efficiency under commercially relevant conditions. These findings indicate that LPPI is an appealing macromolecule for use in practical CO2 capture applications.
