Laboratory environments provide a unique opportunity for students to develop process skills, also known as soft skills or workplace skills. I will describe our recent investigation of the ways that general chemistry laboratory students use process skills rubrics. Both cognitive and group dynamics skills were assessed by students and a TA across a semester of laboratory experiments. Students were able to understand and assess their abilities with group dynamics skills, such as teamwork and communication. However, students were less able to understand and assess their abilities with cognitive skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving. I will also describe the ways our implementation of process skills rubrics has changed over time as we adapted to the constraints of our laboratory environment and resources.
