Heavy metals from anthropogenic sources continue to contaminate food products around the globe. The purpose of this research is to quantitatively determine the concentration of arsenic, cadmium, and lead in popular commercial food products by total reflection X-ray fluorescence. This technique is popular because of the minimal sample preparation effort and time; relatively small sample size; and rapid, simultaneous quantification of multiple trace elements. The analyzed commercial products were purchased at a local retailer in northeast Georgia. Quantification of the metals was achieved by the addition of a known quantity of a rare earth to each sample. All samples were processed in triplicate and batched with a reagent blank.
