Colorimetric analysis was used to determine the equilibrium constant, enthalpy, and Gibb's free energy of adsorption of betanin onto activated charcoal. Initial studies focused on determination of betanin stability and preparation of a calibration curve. To determine the suitability of the system for use in the physical chemistry laboratory, the degradation of betanin in solution was analyzed at several temperatures. These experiments showed the solution is best kept refrigerated but is stable for the length of a typical laboratory period. The stability, ease of measurements, and various quantities that are determined indicates this system will be appropriate as an undergraduate laboratory experiment in the physical chemistry curriculum.
