In 2018-2019, the Kent State Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society raised $1,000 to give to impoverished area high schools to purchase or update their science equipment to ensure high-quality science education for their students; two $500 grants were awarded to Ravenna High School and Waterloo High School. This year, our primary focus will be to continue and expand this grant program. We have already raised over $1,500 through a personalized lab coat sale as well as other fundraising efforts, and three $500 grants will be awarded to local high schools in need this year. The improvements achieved by the application of the previous awards will be also be shared. Our second focus during the 2019-2020 academic year is to expand our outreach to the Kent State student body and surrounding community. We hope to collaborate with other student organizations, including the Public Health Student Association, to hold events such as guest speaker presentations that appeal to the interests of both organizations. Community outreach is also achieved by our participation in Sibs and Kids Weekend to pique the interest of younger generations; our involvement in Explore Kent Chemistry, which allows local high schoolers to learn about chemistry at Kent State; and our participation in the National Chemistry Week celebration in Concord, OH.
