Owing to its extreme sensitivity and easy execution, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) now finds application for a wide variety of problems requiring sensitive and targeted analyte detection.  Despite this widespread application, fundamental challenges still remain especially related to functionalization and stability of the underlying plasmonic substrate.  In this talk, we explore the potential of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) to displace thiols as surface-modification ligands and highlight their ability to do in situ amide coupling.  Additional emphasis is placed on understading the role of surface absorption structure in SERS and SEHRS sensing applications.
